Located in the vibrant heart of Long Island City, Sami's Kabab House LIC stands out as a beacon of authentic Afghan cuisine, serving up rich, aromatic dishes that transport diners straight to the bustling streets of Kabul. Specializing in Afghan and halal fare, this cozy kebab shop seamlessly marries tradition with a welcoming New York charm.
At Sami's, the menu reads like a love letter to Afghan culinary heritage. Signature dishes such as the Uzbeki Qabuli Pulao — the national dish of Afghanistan — feature tender braised lamb shank resting atop fragrant rice adorned with sweet raisins and vibrant carrots, delivering a perfect harmony of sweetness and savory depth. The Mixed Afghan Kabab and Lamb Chops with Rice promise robust, juicy flavors, each bite bursting with expertly spiced meat that strikes a beautiful balance between tender and smoky char. For those seeking a soothing classic, the Korma Chalao offers a comforting stew of lamb or chicken korma cooked Afghan style, steeped in spices and herbs that imbue every mouthful with warmth.
Vegetarian diners will appreciate thoughtful options like the Sabzi Chalao, a rich spinach dish tempered with fresh herbs, spices, and onions, topped with lean protein alternatives or hearty sides such as pita bread and fresh house salad. Complement your meal with delicacies like Hummus, Mantu (steamed dumplings), or the subtly sweet Firnee for dessert, each crafted to showcase authentic Afghan flavors.
The ambiance at Sami’s Kabab House is warm and inviting — an intimate setting where genuine hospitality shines. Customers consistently praise the attentive service, notably Ali and Zahid, who add a personal touch that enhances the overall dining experience. Despite its unpretentious, no-frills atmosphere, the restaurant exudes a comforting authenticity that pairs perfectly with its carefully curated menu.
Patrons frequently highlight the excellence of Sami's dishes: Muhammad Sohail calls the pulao and lamb chops "outclassed" and "mind blowing", Christina W. recommends the kebabs as a must-try for any craving, while Bong Arquiza remarks on the consistently bold, perfectly cooked lamb chops that have converted even those hesitant about lamb's gaminess. The restaurant’s dedication to quality and authenticity is palpable in every dish, making it a hidden gem for both Afghan food aficionados and curious newcomers alike.
Whether you're in the mood for a hearty plate of Afghan Palaw paired with classic side dishes, or a comforting bowl of chicken soup drizzled with garlic mint yogurt sauce, Sami’s Kabab House LIC offers a memorable culinary journey. The slightly higher price point is a testament to the quality ingredients and care put into each preparation — but rest assured, the flavors and experience more than justify the value.
For an authentic taste of Afghanistan right in the midst of NYC’s diverse culinary scene, Sami’s Kabab House LIC invites you to savor every bite and experience the heartwarming hospitality that has earned it a growing and loyal following.
Great place delecious Food, Pulao and Lamb chops are outclassed. The Rice is mind blowing. It's pricey though ask before you order Family trey
Came here a few times and have to say, if you’re craving a kebab, you have to come here. Food was delicious. It’s no frills and good food. My favorites are the koftas, but I don’t think you can go wrong with anything on the menu.
Awesome place for authentic Afghani food. American style delicious afghani food. We loved the atmosphere and the food. Zahid was an amazing manager and waiter. Thanks!
Ali is a welcoming host and server. The (vegetarian) food was delicious!! We got the vegetarian sampler which was tasty and filling for two of us. Plus he advised us that the rice is not vegetarian so we had the delicious bread instead! How thoughtful. This is a small restaurant that deserves a big reputation! The price was quite reasonable. What a find! Overall excellence!!
This was my third time visiting Sami’s Kabab House, but my first time at the LIC location. I’m happy to say the food remains just as consistent and delicious as I remember. I always order the lamb chops, and they never disappoint. The flavors are rich and bold, and the meat is perfectly cooked every single time. I’m usually not a big fan of lamb because of its gaminess, but the way they prepare it here completely changes that. You wouldn’t even know it’s lamb if someone didn’t tell you. I also love their seasoned rice, which pairs so well with the Qabuli, a sweet pickled carrot and raisin side dish that adds a nice contrast to the savory meat. Everything on the plate feels well thought out and balanced. Now for the downsides. The space is quite small and can get stuffy, and the strong smell of grilled meat tends to linger. I left smelling like food, so I probably wouldn’t recommend coming here if you have other plans right after. It’s best enjoyed when you can head straight home after. The biggest surprise was the 20% service charge that was automatically added to our bill. It was clearly stated on the menu, but still felt strange since we ordered and paid at the counter. This charge applies to parties of two or more, which is pretty unusual for a casual dine-in setup. That said, the staff were friendly and accommodating throughout our visit. Despite those minor issues, I’ll definitely be coming back for the food. The flavors are that good, and the quality is always on point.
Delicious kebabs, chicken stew, homemade bread, and vegetable plates at this comfortable spot on Vernon on the main old drag of Long Island City. The okra was amazing, the eggplant too, and the stew hearty. Decent portions! Lovely green tea to finish. Kind service. Dishes came out hot as they were made.
Delicious food, huge portions, reasonable prices. This is what dining SHOULD be and is so hard to find in NYC these days. The huge pile of stewed spinach, the savory rice, dessert-like shaved carrots, the dumplings, the green tea with cardamom. Every bit of it was smashing. I’ve a strong appetite and had plenty of leftovers. The vibe is traditional and no frills. So don’t walk in expecting someone to pamper you.
